Hogmanay is the Scottish word for the last day of the year, synonymous with New Year’s Eve. The celebration has deep historical roots, with its origins believed to date back to the Viking winter solstice celebrations. Over the centuries, Hogmanay has evolved into a vibrant and spirited festival, blending ancient traditions with modern revelry.
Edinburgh’s Hogmanay Street Party is one of the world’s most famous New Year’s Eve celebrations. The city comes alive with music, dance, and a jubilant atmosphere. Princes Street, at the heart of the festivities, is transformed into a colossal open-air party venue, featuring multiple stages hosting live performances from internationally acclaimed artists. This year Pulp will be headlining the event with a DJ set from Hot Chip.
Kicking off the Hogmanay celebrations, the Torchlight Procession is a mesmerizing spectacle where thousands of people carry torches through the city, creating a river of light. The procession culminates in a stunning visual display on Calton Hill, offering breathtaking panoramic views of Edinburgh.
For music enthusiasts, Concert in the Gardens is a must-attend event. Against the backdrop of Edinburgh Castle, world-class musicians and bands take the stage, delivering unforgettable performances that set the tone for the year ahead.
The crescendo of Edinburgh’s Hogmanay is undoubtedly the midnight fireworks display over Edinburgh Castle. The skies above the historic fortress explode in a kaleidoscope of colours, marking the arrival of the New Year in grandiose fashion.
