We have over a thousand years of history behind the city, with beautiful buildings, parks and communities on the show to the world. If you’re a big Instagram user, Edinburgh is definitely one of the top places to be.
The panoramic views from Calton Hill have astonished and inspired visitors for centuries. Major landmarks can be seen from a bird’s eye view; Arthur’s Seat with the Crags behind Holyrood Palace and the Parliament, Leith and the Firth of Forth, Princes Street in its New Town grid, and the Royal Mile climbing up towards the Castle. Atop Calton Hill you will also find a small collection of stunning monuments that are perfect for any Instagram feed.
Circus Lane is a picturesque cobbled street in Edinburgh. This residential street with pretty flower-covered terraced mews houses has gained fame in recent years due to its “instagramability”. It’s a great place to enjoy a short walk and take some photos. Located in Stockbridge to the north east of the city centre, there are plenty of quirky shops, bars and restaurants to explore in the nearby area. There is no doubt that this should be added to your list of Instagrammable places in Edinburgh.
A ‘tranquil, green oasis’ found by Stockbridge, this is one of Edinburgh’s best kept secrets. With gorgeous gardens, the beautiful water of Leith, and historic 19th century houses, Dean Village is definitely one you don’t want to miss.
Described as “one of the most exciting historic sites in Western Europe,” Edinburgh Castle is a must-see during any trip to Scotland. Sitting atop Castle Rock, in the heart of Edinburgh’s City Centre, the Castle has history dating back over eleven-hundred years, since at least the reign of David I in the 12th Century. The castle is the second most-visited paid attraction in the whole of the UK, and the most-visited in Scotland. Edinburgh castle offers the opportunity to relive a lot of the history and important historical figures behind it, with the option of a guided tour. Alternatively, you can explore the grounds on your own. You won’t be able to miss the Castle when in Edinburgh, as it sits 430ft above sea level, and is incredibly prominent against the city’s skyline. The castle is beautiful from all angles, but for the most Instagram worthy image, head to the Ross Fountain in Princes Street Gardens. There you’ll find the beautifully renovated fountain sits perfectly in the foreground of the Castle.
Its name comes from its tradition as a processional route for kings and queens for the last 500 years. Its length is approximately one Scots mile long, which is longer than an English mile but hasn’t been used since the eighteenth century. Edinburgh’s high street is one of the oldest in the country, leading from Holyrood palace in the East, uphill to Edinburgh Castle, atop Castle Rock, in the west. On the Royal Mile you’ll find some truly Instagram-able spots, with buildings, alleyways and streets that are hundreds of years old, and many colourful shop fronts. Look out for the famous Canongate Tolbooth clock above the People’s Story Museum, for one of the best shots in Edinburgh.
Any fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe will recognise this street instantly from Avengers: Infinity War. Cockburn street winds beautifully from the High Street down to Waverley Station and is well renowned for its picturesque nature. The (now world-famous) street is lined with dozens of colourfully stunning shops, that can brighten up the gloomiest of days.
Much like Cockburn Street, Victoria Street is also a beautifully colourful, winding road that leads to the royal mile. This street, although not as famous, offers stunning, Instagram-worthy pictures due to its vibrant shops and dual-level layout.
The Vennel, which connects Lauriston Place to the Grassmarket, offers a truly unique perspective of Edinburgh Castle. From here, Edinburgh Castle sits perfectly above the skyline, with the street’s steps leading below. There is no doubt that this should be added to your list of Instagrammable places in Edinburgh.
From South St. David Street, the wonderfully striking Sir Walter Scott Monument is impossible to miss. The second largest monument to a writer in the world sits at just over 200ft high and is framed perfectly by our Old Waverley Hotel on the left and the old Jenners building on the right. This is one of the most popular images on Instagram of Edinburgh, and for good reason!
We may be currently closed but if you require accommodation in the heart of Edinburgh then we recommend that you look at staying at one of our sister hotels which are all in the heart of the Scottish capital and within walking distance from the cities most iconic and most visited attractions.
